Week 5 EOC: The Web's New Gold Mine: Your Secrets

The fact that companies are paying to get information from us to use as better market research is smart but scary but the most terrifying part is the companies selling the information regardless of how “harmless” or “anonymous” it is or not it is still a violation of privacy in my opinion. Now that my opinion is out of the way let take this from a professional viewpoint. The strategy of buying and selling certain information on people through websites visited is a fast and easy way to segment your market and to find new customers all at once. Although not a fool proof method it get the job done and helps you to better understand a person and then to create a personal ad around them via their internet usage. The face that they found a way to plant hundreds of thousands of files into your computer is I think a feat in its self. But the problem that I hope to never see in the foreseeable future is someone taking advantage of said technology to use against either the people or the company. So yea for now its harmless and coded and what not but with the way people have been abusing technology lately its bound to backfire in a big way that can only end ugly. So with that said we can’t really stop it from happening, as it’s not illegal, but we can protect ourselves and hope for the best in the future that no one decides to get the idea in their head to start selling the information to the wrong people or just abusing it themselves.

EOC week 2: Survey Research

So the purpose of my survey is to see the buying and consuming habits of U.S. customers for 2003, 2004, and 2005 for the various racial/ethnic groups when it comes to dairy and non-dairy products. This survey is and exploratory survey that spans 3 years and a large variety of ethnic groups in the United States.  Conducted by the Simmons National Consumer Study there are a total of five questions that make up the whole of this survey. The first question being what is the Percent of U.S. Ethnic/Racial Groups Who Watch Their Diet Because of Lactose Intolerance with the result being that black people are the ones who watch their diet more closely as the years progress, assumingly because 70% of African Americans are lactose intolerant, this number may have increased over the years as this was published in 2006 , the group that watches their diet the least when it comes to lactose intolerance is Hispanic people. Second is Percent of U.S. Ethnic/Racial Groups Who Use Lactose-Free Milk, once again black people are the lead in this survey while it is white people who use it the least. I will not go through all of the survey but as you can see it about the dairy intake of people in the United States as stated previously. The purpose of this survey and the market research that goes along with is to let companies know that there is a market for lactose free dairy products and it’s a fast growing one. According to  this it is unhealthy to cut out dairy completely in one’s diet but what people are reacting to is the lactose in the food so the goal is to take that part out of their food and beverage product while still giving them the benefits of dairy necessary to their diet.

E.O.C.Week 1 : What I am Expecting from this Class.

What I am expecting from this class is gain to better understand how and why companies do their market research and how they determine how to best use that information to help them with sales, competition, and to break into new market segmentation's (growth). Also its just plain interesting seeing what people do research on because sometimes its things you never thought you would need to do it on but to companies these thing are valuable information that they pay people thousands of dollars to get for them rather it be form their company of their competition. So I hope to learn and recognize the value of research surveys and financial surveys as well because as of now it’s all just a bunch of log wordy documents that I can’t quite comprehend. So that’s an ability I hope to come out with at the end of this course.
